A vintage Scottish silver and smoky quartz brooch by Malcolm Gray, Kirkwall, Orkney, 1976

The oval brooch has a rope twist border enclosing a pierced Celtic interlace inner border which has been centrally set with an oval cut smoky quartz in collet setting. The reverse has a hinged steel pin with scroll safety clasp and is marked ‘MG’ and a post 1976 Edinburgh convention marks signifying sterling silver.

The Orcadian jewellery maker Malcolm Gray first registered his maker’s punch with the Edinburgh Assay Office in 1968. The following year, he established Ortak Silvercraft which subsequently become one of Orkney’s most iconic jewellery brands alongside Shiela Fleet, Ola Gorie and Aurora, as well as one of the UK’s leading jewellery manufacturers.
