A modernist silver brooch of abstract form resembling a splash. The reverse is marked ‘GEORG JENSEN’, ‘DENMARK’, ‘925 S’ for sterling silver, ‘324’, followed by London import marks for sterling silver and 1971. The brooch is secured with a hinged pin and C-scroll safety clasp.
The teal coloured box has a hinged lid and push-button opening, with ‘MADE IN DENMARK’ stamped on the base. The cushioned lid interior has ‘GEORG JENSEN’, surmounted with a crown, foil stamped in silver. Due to the box’s age, it does show signs of discolouration to both the exterior and interior.
Georg Jensen (1866-1935) trained as a goldsmith and sculptor before establishing his own workshop in Copenhagen in 1904. He was influenced by nature and form, and his business (named after him) created highly original jewellery and silverware, which in turn pioneered 20th century Scandinavian design. The company continues to exist and is still internationally recognised today.
Henning Koppel (1918-1981) was a significant 20th century Danish sculptor and designer who joined Georg Jensen in 1945, a collaboration that lasted the rest of his career. His silverwork is famous for its abstract and sculptural qualities which won him many awards.
