‘Moon’ brooch by Anton Michelsen, designed by Eigil Jensen, Denmark, 1950s

A modernist brooch in a slim crescent form representing the moon. The reverse of brooch is stamped with the maker’s mark ‘AM [surmounted with a crown]’ for Anton Michelsen, ‘DENMARK’, and ‘STERLING’ for sterling silver, as well as the designer’s mark for Eigil Jensen. It is secured with a hinged pin and C-scroll safety clasp.

Anton Michelsen (1809–1877) was an exceptional goldsmith who served his apprenticeship in Odense before attending the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. In 1841 he established his own workshop in Copenhagen and was quickly appointed the prestigious position of  jeweller to the Danish court in 1848. After his death, the firm continued in the Michelson family until it eventually merged with Gorge Jensen.

Eigil Jensen (1917-2002) served an apprenticeship in goldsmithing and had previously worked at Hans Hansen’s goldsmithing firm before finding employment at Michelsen’s.  During his time there, he was involved in many prestigious commissions including for the church and crown. In 1973, he was appointed Head of Production, a position he retained until his retirement.
