The badge is formed of a circular belted garter enclosing the motto ‘PER MARE PER TERRAS’, translated as ‘By Sea, By Land’, while the crest within shows a hand holding a dagger. The reverse is set with a brass hinged pin. Unmarked.
This is an unusual badge because, although it has been made to a high standard (typical of Scottish silver examples), it has been produced in copper or a copper alloy. There are no signs of any previous silver plating so it seems likely this was a specific commission.

Some tarnish to the reverse.
